After arriving last night, we had the day to explore the town of Ushuaia as we didn’t have to be at the port until 15:00. We considered doing the train to the End of the World and the
Tierra del Fuego reserve, but decided against waking up super early to be able to do that. Instead, we had a light breakfast in our hotel and then took a cab out to the
Martial Glacier, just outside of town. It’s estimated that this glacier will be completely gone in 20 years. it was relatively warm in town so I only brought a light jacket but as soon as we stepped out of the taxi, I regretted that! The wind on the mountain was quite sharp and cut right through my jacket. Nevertheless, we hiked up what looked like a ski run in the winter just adjacent to the ski lift. We climbed to the top of the run and then paused to practice taking some photos.
Back in town, we explored the local shops which included a Timberland, a Hard Rock Cafe, and a handful of local souvenir shops. There was also a artist’s co-op “handicraft fair.”
We reported to the port on time and then loaded up onto the ship for our journey. Since some weather was coming in, our captain made the decision to leave promptly on time and we set sail through the Beagle Channel.
