Since Apple had grown and the old system could no longer support them,
1981 became the year for reorganization at Apple. Mike Scott was bumped
from president to vice president as Mike Markkula slid in his place as well as
taking the CEO position (which he did not want), giving up his position as
chairman which was given to Jobs. An Accessory Products Division was formed to
handle the production of printers, modems, etc. 40 employees were also laid off
to "streamline international machinery" (Apple Computer). The remaining 2,500
employees could borrow an Apple II+, and then after one year, it became theirs.
Apple's famous Research and Development budget rose to $21 million. At this
point, there were 3,000 Apple Dealers worldwide, and 1,000 Authorized Service
Centers. As Apple was restructuring, Internal Business Machines released their
first personal computer, the PC. Since Apple at that time enjoyed a challenge,
they placed an ad in the Wall Street Journal which read "Welcome IBM, Seriously."
